“Stand after stand of Hitler’s 'Mein Kampf', the 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion' forgery and countless antisemitic conspiracy theories... For young Arab readers, UNESCO appears to endorse the bigoted stereotypes of Jews, as expounded by Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran... Damning at a time of reconciliation between Gulf States and Israel, now facing common enemies.”

"The list below  is just a taste of this obsessive-compulsive vomit of hatred... We urge you to publicly condemn and, forthwith, to strip the SIBF of the title of 'UNESCO Book Capital of the Year'."

Paris, 7 November 2019

In a letter to UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, noted that “the Centre annually monitors hate on the shelves of Arab international book fairs.”

“The last  Fair this year, in Sharjah, UAE, is arguably, the most vicious. To our horror, the current Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2019) is held under the auspices of UNESCO, as ‘UNESCO World Book Capital’, stated Samuels.

The letter continued, “This link camouflages the reality, as its manifesto declares ‘Open a book that opens minds: to celebrate the power and influence of books in uniting peoples... The initiative aims to promote peace, cultural enrichment, and intercultural dialogue through education’... The reality is stand after stand of Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’, the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ forgery and countless titles referring to Jewish conspiracies...”

“Our selection below is only the tip of the iceberg of piles of such screeds,” added Samuels.

The letter stressed, “the organizers are known to carefully vet all titles on display for Islamophobia, but leave Jew-hatred in pride of place!”

The letter protested, “Madam Director-General, UNESCO appears in Sharjah to endorse this travesty, thus vitiating your educational booklets campaign on antisemitism and Holocaust denial as meaningless”... “Sadly, the name of UNESCO is abused as appearing to be complicit in validating for young Arab readers, the bigoted stereotypes of Jews - as expounded by Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. This is particularly damning at a time of reconciliation between Gulf States and Israel, now facing common enemies.”

The Centre called on the Director-General “to publicly condemn this outrage and to launch an immediate enquiry as to those responsible, to result in your applying appropriate disciplinary measures.”

"The list below  is just a taste of this obsessive-compulsive vomit of hatred... We urge you to publicly condemn and, forthwith, to strip the SIBF of the title,'UNESCO Book Capital of the Year'...  We consider as a more appropriate title: ‘World Book Capital of Antisemitic Hate,’ concluded Samuels.

The letter was shared with interested UNESCO member-states.
